Have you ever heard of Party Jazz?

According to the “musically promiscuous” Cathy Morris, it's a phrase that describes jazz that is “all over the map, groove wise” and incorporates elements from R&B and Latin music.

For over 35 years, Cathy Morris has taken her electric violin all over the world. Whether she’s performing for world leaders, mentoring student orchestras, or composing original works, Cathy Morris’s career reflects both versatility and passion.

Arts with a Purpose

Not only is she an accomplished musician, but Morris is a passionate philanthropist. Eight years ago, Morris turned her music into a mission, and founded a non-profit organization called Arts with a Purpose. Through workshops, concerts and hands-on programs, she makes sure everyone—from kids to seniors can feel the magic of music.

“I started using my art as a means to impact and empower others, sharing with audiences and other artists alike the message of connectivity and mutual respect for all” Morris says.

Arts with a Purpose hosts workshops, exhibitions and events for everyone. The programs range from activities for children, teens, adults and seniors. The goal is to promote inclusivity and confidence in art. Imagine a room filled with 20 people, each picking up a string instrument for the very first time. As part of their program, Try This Instrument?, they offer classes designed to introduce students of all ages to the joy of learning a new instrument.

Naptown Block Party

The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation has hosted Indy Jazz Fest for over 25 years. They have hosted globally known artists around Indianapolis at venues including The Jazz Kitchen and The Cabaret.

Indiana actually has quite the jazz history—back in the day, Indiana Avenue was famous for hosting several iconic jazz stars like Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, and David Baker. That legacy was brought back to life in 1999 when the first Indy Jazz Fest began.

Morris was there for the first ever Indy Jazz Fest and has brought the love of music and life to each of her performances.

Now, she returns once again, this time to light up the stage at the Naptown Block Party on September 13th at The Jazz Kitchen. The event is part of this year's Indy Jazz Fest celebration and promises a high-energy evening full of soul, groove, and that unmistakable “Party Jazz” vibe that Cathy Morris brings.

Joining her on the lineup is Bashiri Asad, The Shed, The Tucker Brothers, and more. Expect a fusion of styles, dynamic collaborations, and the kind of musical spontaneity that Indy Jazz Fest has become known for.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of Cathy Morris or simply looking to catch some world-class live music, the Naptown Block Party on September 13th at The Jazz Kitchen is where you need to be. Come for the groove, stay for the community, and celebrate the artists that keep Naptown's jazz legacy alive.
